This week Myllypuro Senior Centre has been celebrating its official opening. The former hospital building has undergone a complete transformation recently into a functional, safe, and activity-packed home for more than 100 seniors, who moved in last autumn.

On Wednesday the ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Deputy Mayor Daniel Sazonov and the music was by the band, Lauri & Yusuf. Speeches were by Juha Jolkkonen; the Head of the Social and Health Department from @helsinginsote and Mari Sairanen; the director of the Myllypuro Senior Centre, as well as Seija Meripaasi and Maritta Haavisto.

In the winter garden, there is currently a temporary exhibition named `Kuun sillalla….. Kohtaamisia´, by sculptor Taisto Rauta, running until the 24th of July. The mobile hanging in the same space is by Jenni Rope @jennirope and is a permanent commission by the city.

We have a long history of collaborating with different artists on projects.

For the Penttilänranta housing, architect Kirsti Sivén worked closely with artist Pekka Paikkari, as well as the developer, to create the ‘percentage art’ which was a condition for the land handover.

On the site of a former sawmill in Joensuu, a series of installations were created reflecting the area’s past. The works were aptly titled ‘Joki’ (‘River’). The facades are integrated with large fired ceramic or recycled glass panels. In the entrance, there are reliefs made of logs and recycled glass as well as large-scale prints of the sawmill's history. In the lightwells, there are stone and glass arrangements, and on the balconies, there are recycled glass lights embedded into the timber railings.

It was important for the artworks to be integrated into the structure as much as possible and to be low maintenance so they could be enjoyed for years to come.
