Housing Reform Competition, Helsinki

The Spårö quarter is an oasis of diverse urban life surrounded by tram tracks.

The proposal for the Housing Reform Helsinki 2020 open competition received the” SPÅRÖ” honourary mention (Asuntoreformi Helsinki – Asuminen 2020).

The residential buildings wrap around the block with the parking facility placed hidden inside as a compact automated parking system in between the buildings.

A terraced green hill housing shared services brings together the two levels and two courtyards, above and below, each with a different character. Across the middle, a pedestrian path connects the two sides of the block.

A lively urban space is created by the small street-level shops, and a grocery store located at the busy corner between Atlantinkatu street and the pedestrian path. The small businesses beside the tram stops are well suited to climate-responsible services such as clothing alteration and shoe repair shops. The premises can also be connected to apartments behind or above.
