Bahamankatu Housing, Helsinki

The light-coloured Bahamankatu Housing forms a confident endpoint for the western side branch of Hyväntoivonpuisto park in Jätkäsaari.

Bahamankatu Housing encloses a small ground-level courtyard within Jätkäsaari’s smallest block. Along Atlantinkatu, there is a master-planned entrance courtyard with a paved area, trees, and vegetation. Commercial spaces are centralised on the south side facing Bermudankuja, with a wide area along the lane suitable for a café or restaurant terrace.

The buildings are six storeys high, with the top floor intended to be recessed according to the master plan. On street facades, the masterplan-mandated render was replaced with light-coloured brick. On courtyard facades, high-quality white concrete sandwich elements were used, featuring alternating floor-high textured and lightly washed stripes. To minimise the appearance of seams, horizontal seams were positioned at the top of windows, and vertical seams aligned with the edges of the textured fields. On the long balconies along Bermudankuja and Bahamankatu, each apartment has both an open and a more secluded balcony section, alternating between full-height glazing behind railings and glazing above enclosed railings.

Uponor’s lightweight pipe system was tested in the project. Wet areas and kitchens are centralised around the pipe groups, introducing wall-mounted toilets rarely used in rental projects. The largest family apartments are situated in the narrow central section, allowing kitchen and living spaces to receive light from both the east and west. Residents’ recreation room and laundry are located along Atlantinkatu, while sauna facilities with cooling terraces are on the top floor.
