Hopeasalmenranta Detached Houses

Kulosaari, Helsinki, 2001

Hopeasalmenranta Housing company consists of two detached houses by the sea. The plot was sectioned off the grounds of a large jugendstil villa.

The buildings were located down by the shore to leave space around the old villa and to preserve the trees in the middle area of the site. The garage doubles as a retaining wall to accommodate the steep slope of the site and contains storage rooms in the basement. A stepped pathway by the garage leading down to the store branches out to the building entrances.

The floor plans of the buildings are almost identical. On the sea-facing side, there is a spacious, double-height living room, off which opens on a generous dining area and a gallery-like lounge above it. There are two fireplaces, one at the pivot of the living room and the dining area, and another one on the glazed outdoor terrace. At the outer ends of the buildings there are sauna and the utility room, which connect to a veranda with shielding trellis-work below the upstairs balcony. The sea-facing facade is all glass and the balconies and terraces in front may be protected from the elements with a sliding glazing system.
